Sixteen members of IBEW Local 1837 work at PPL in Eastern Maine generating electricity for the New England electric grid. (The letters from the words Pennsylvania Power and Light, although the name they use and go by is always the acronym.) PPL purchased the Maine assets from Bangor Hydro after the Maine deregulation laws took effect and prohibited any company from owning both generation and distribution assets in the state. The members who work at PPL were formerly employed by Bangor Hydro and are longtime union members.
