IBEW Members at CMP Urged to Attend New Informational Meeting
![]() |
September 4, 2009 - The Union Negotiating Committee at Central Maine Power Company has scheduled an informational meeting for Tuesday, September 22 at 6:00 p.m. at the Gardiner Area High School. When the meeting is held in late September, the members of this bargaining unit will have been working without a contract for more than four months.
“This meeting is for us to share our thoughts and to thoroughly discuss the most recent final offer from the Company,” said Bill Dunn, the IBEW Assistant Business Manager who heads up the committee. “It will be vitally important for all members to attend and participate in the discussions.”
In CMP President Sara Burns’ August 21st message to all employees, she included a “fact sheet” which focused solely on the post-retirement medical issue. Basically, because many other companies are eliminating these types of benefits, CMP wants to follow suit.
In contrast, the Union Negotiating Committee has been looking at a package of proposals that includes several other issues such as wages, prescription drug plan co-pays, maintaining the value of the Cash Balance Retirement Plan, a more enhanced 401(k) plan in place of the defined benefit pension plan for new hires, and preservation of the present value of the Post-Retirement Medical Plan.
The Union Negotiating Committee is urging IBEW members at CMP in this bargaining unit to make every effort to attend this informational meeting on Tuesday, September 22 at 6:00 p.m. The Gardiner Area High School is located at 40 West Hill Road in Gardiner, Maine.
Hundreds of IBEW members filled the Gardiner High School Gymnasium at the last meeting in late May. IBEW Local 1837 represents approximately 700 workers at Central Maine Power Company. These union members design, build, repair and maintain the electric grid serving the largest customer base of any electric utility in Maine, and provide customer service assistance to residents and businesses in most of Southern, Central and Western Maine.
