IBEW 1837 at Maine Public Service
Bob Reed pulls wire while helping set up lighting during construction of the Maine Winter Sports facility in Fort KentApproximately 50 members of IBEW 1837 work at Maine Public Service in Presque Isle, Fort Kent, Caribou, and Island Falls, Maine. MPS was acquired by Maine & Maritimes in 2004. IBEW 1837 members who work at MPS are lineworkers, stockhandlers, and technical service workers. The stockhandlers are the most recent part of the bargaining unit, having organized in 1999. The rest of the group joined the union in the early 1970’s. Aaron Sweetser reports that back then they even had a classification called ‘woodsman’ in the contract!
The members at MPS are proud to serve their community in more ways than just their work for the utility. Members have also put in many volunteer hours helping with such community projects as running wire for lighting at the Maine Winter Sports facility in Fort Kent, the Caribou School District ski trail, and the Maine Winter Sports facility in Presque Isle.
