IBEW 1837 at FPL
Approximately 90 members of IBEW 1837 work for Florida Power and Light generating electricity. They maintain and operate the oil-fired plant on Cousins Island in Yarmouth and the hydro dams on the Kennebec, Androscoggin, and Saco Rivers.
FPL-Maine acquired the Maine assets from CMP in 1998, shortly after Maine’s electric deregulation law prohibited a company from owning both generation and distribution assets. Most of the IBEW 1837 members who work at the FPL facilities are former CMP employees who worked at their jobs prior to deregulation and the sale, and are longtime union members. IBEW 1837 members who work at FPL belong to Units 6, 7, 8 or 9, depending on their work location. Saco River employees belong to Unit 6, Androscoggin River employees belong to Unit 7, WF Wyman Steam plant employees belong to Unit 8, and Kennebec River employees belong to Unit 9.
