PSNH Generation Facilities Threatened by House Bill 1238

PSNH generation facilities are threatened by HB 1238. March 28, 2012 UPDATE - NH House Bill 1238 has been tabled by a 304-19 vote today by the New Hampshire House of Representatives. IBEW 1837 thanks everyone for their support!

March 26, 2012 - This Wednesday, March 28, the New Hampshire House of Representatives is expected to vote on a bill that may be devastating to many members of IBEW 1837 and to the union itself.

IBEW Local 1837 is in complete agreement with PSNH in their opposition to House Bill 1238, a bill that could affect 186 jobs for our union members at generation facilities owned by the Company. These are good-paying union jobs, and many other non-union positions could also be impacted.

House Bill 1238 could force PSNH to sell off or retire PSNH fossil, hydro, or biomass generation assets. This amended bill would have far-reaching consequences for the entire state, and could impact the ability for PSNH to provide cost-effective electricity to New Hampshire electricity customers. Some of these facilities could be sold to foreign companies and others might be shut down altogether. You can read the amendment to HB 1238 by clicking here.

A Tragic Loss

We lost an IBEW Brother on Monday, January 16, 2012.

John R. Plante from Oakland, Maine was killed just before 4:00 p.m. when he fell about 55 feet from a pole on Boom Road in Saco. Brother Plant, 44, was a member of IBEW Local 104 working for New York-based Hawkeye, LLC. Although an OSHA investigation has not been completed, Saco Police said that it appeared that all required safety equipment was being used.

While it is still too soon to understand what went so terribly wrong, we must use this solemn occasion to remind ourselves of the inherent danger in the jobs that we do on daily basis.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to John Plante’s family, friends, and all of his Brothers and Sisters at IBEW Local 104.

In solidarity,
Dick Rogers
Business Manager, IBEW Local 1837

IBEW 1837 Member Mark Easter Gets Lifesaving Award

Mark Easter is congratulated by IBEW 1837 officials.September 28, 2011 - In a ceremony attended by many of his co-workers at PSNH as well as company supervisors and officials from IBEW 1837, Mark Easter received the highest award his union offers: The IBEW Lifesaving Award. Brother Easter, an IBEW 1837 member since 1999, is a System Machinist in PSNH’s Generation Division working at the Hooksett Line Area Work Center.

The award stems from Mark’s response to a car crash earlier this year in Manchester, New Hampshire on the morning of February 9. Tom Powers of Merrimack was severely injured on the Amoskeag Bridge after being struck by a car while checking damage on his own vehicle from an earlier accident. Pinned between two cars and bleeding profusely with the temperature hovering around 5 degrees, Powers was still in danger from oncoming traffic driving into the glare of the morning sun.

IBEW 1837 Members Continue to Push Back Against Anti-Union Legislation

IBEW Local 1837 's Eric Hesseltine and Eugene Lynch at New Hampshire State House rally.April 12, 2011 - Members of IBEW Local 1837 have been playing an active role in worker efforts to push back against union-busting legislation both Maine and New Hampshire. At rallies, vigils, in testimony at public hearings and in meetings with legislative representatives, Brothers and Sisters in our Local have been speaking out against efforts to weaken all unions and to even to strip some public sector workers of their rights to collectively bargain.

In New Hampshire, Rep. Neal Kurk added an amendment to House Bill 2 that would essentially strip collective bargaining rights from public sector workers once their contracts expire by making them “at will” employees whose terms and conditions would be determined by the employer. HB2 went on to pass the full House. IBEW 1837 members at Littleton Water and Light, a municipal utility, could be directly affected if it becomes law.

National Boycott Targets WGME-TV 13 over Unfair Contract Implementation

WGME 13 Studios in PortlandFebruary 17, 2011 - WGME-TV, Channel 13 in Portland is one of almost five dozen stations owned by Sinclair Broadcasting that have been placed on the nationwide AFL-CIO boycott list because of a labor dispute here in Maine. The station unilaterally implemented portions of a contract offer one year ago on February 17, 2010, despite the opposition of the workers and their Union.

As IBEW Local 1837 members at WGME 13 continue to create large profits for parent company Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc., of Maryland, workers behind the scenes have been without a contract since early 2010 while seeing their paychecks shrink – prompting the AFL-CIO to add the company to the federation’s boycott list.
