IBEW 1837 at Central Maine Power Company (CMP)

Members working at Central Maine Power (CMP) comprise the largest bargaining unit of IBEW 1837, with approximately 650 members represented in the original contract. The contract covers field and support workers in the line departments, meter departments, substations departments, communications center and field offices. There is one customer service phone center included in the bargaining unit, and one that is not represented. In February of 2005 the Area and System dispatchers voted to join the union and subsequently became members of the bargaining unit.

In January 2006 an additional group of 47 employees voted to join the union. This group, consisting of engineers in various departments, programmers, GIS and CADD technicians, offices services personnel, technical services representatives, and a variety of other support personnel is still working on negotiating their first contract with the Company.

Collectively, these union members design, build, repair and maintain the electric grid serving the largest customer base of any electric utility in Maine, and provide customer service assistance to residents and businesses in most of southern, central and western Maine. They also control the balance and flow of electricity across the grid beyond their own customer base into other parts of Maine and New England.

Central Maine Power Company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Energy East Corporation.

IBEW 1837 members who work at CMP belong to either Unit 6, 7, 8 or 9, depending on their work locations.

IBEW 1837 at FPL

Approximately 90 members of IBEW 1837 work for Florida Power and Light generating electricity. They maintain and operate the oil-fired plant on Cousins Island in Yarmouth and the hydro dams on the Kennebec, Androscoggin, and Saco Rivers.

FPL-Maine acquired the Maine assets from CMP in 1998, shortly after Maine’s electric deregulation law prohibited a company from owning both generation and distribution assets. Most of the IBEW 1837 members who work at the FPL facilities are former CMP employees who worked at their jobs prior to deregulation and the sale, and are longtime union members.

IBEW 1837 members who work at FPL belong to Units 6, 7, 8 or 9, depending on their work location. Saco River employees belong to Unit 6, Androscoggin River employees belong to Unit 7, WF Wyman Steam plant employees belong to Unit 8, and Kennebec River employees belong to Unit 9.

IBEW Local 1837 successfully negotiated with NAES for a first contract for the employees at Granite Ridge.

IBEW is excited to have the opportunity to represent all maintenance and operations personnel at the plant.

Granite Ridge Energy members of IBEW Local 1837 are located in Unit 2’s territory and attend those unit meetings.

MPS was acquired by Maine & Maritimes in 2004.

IBEW 1837 members who work at MPS are lineworkers, stockhandlers, and technical service workers. The stockhandlers are the most recent part of the bargaining unit, having organized in 1999. The rest of the group joined the union in the early 1970’s. Aaron Sweetser reports that back then they even had a classification called ‘woodsman’ in the contract!

These members were closely involved in the recent construction of the Evergreen Wind Energy project in Mars Hill, running wire nearly a mile up the mountain, constructing a substation and switching station, and running the wire between those facilities.

The members at MPS are proud to serve their community in more ways than just their work for the utility. Members have also put in many volunteer hours helping with such community projects as running wire for lighting at the Maine Winter Sports facility in Fort Kent, the Caribou School District ski trail, and the Maine Winter Sports facility in Presque Isle.

IBEW 1837 at Sea-3

Ten workers at the Sea-3 propane facility in Newington belong to IBEW Local 1837. Sea-3 is a crucial component of the energy distribution system in New England, and one of only about half a dozen liquefied gas-handling facilities operating in the United States.

The propane is stored in refrigerated tanks onshore before being distributed to retailers by train and truck.

The company that owns Sea-3 is privately held. The people who make up the Union at Sea-3 are Operations and Maintenance Personnel who receive, store, and distribute propane at the Newington facility.

IBEW Local 1837 members at Sea-3 belong to Unit 1.
